A Series of Iyengar Immersions at Clear Spring
with Devon Dederich and Anne Schultz

We think understanding the philosophy of Yoga makes the practice--and the way we practice--more understandable, inspiring, and ultimately more doable.  These Fri.-Sat. Immersions are designed to introduce students to the philosophy of Yoga in a practice-oriented format.  We offer this to all students with a background in Iyengar Yoga.

The philosophy of one of our core texts, Patanjali Yoga Sutra,, is presented this year.  It is not necessary to read up and study ahead of time, although we do show what sections of text we will present in our classes, for those who do want to think about things ahead of time (that would be our teachers, ahem, if no one else.)

Note:  The first two Friday afternoon sessions are for teachers and experienced practitioners. Friday evening’s Philosophy Soup Kitchen and Saturday morning’s asana class are for everyone with 6 months’ Iyengar Yoga experience.

Schedule

Friday 3:30-4:30pm  Teachers’ Practice ($10; Devon leads)
This class is for teachers of Iyengar Yoga, or those studying to become Iyengar teachers.  We   look at issues of philosophy as they relate to our method of teaching.
4:30-6:30pm     Advanced Practice ($20; Anne or Devon lead)

Note, this is not a class, but more of a guided practice of poses we can do and ones that      challenge us all.  We design sequences that develop the philosophical issues raised by our Sutra study.  This session is for practitioners with experience, who can work with intermediate or advanced poses, and who don’t mind not being able to do everything in our sequences.
7:30-9:00pm  Philosophy Soup Kitchen:  ($30; Devon hosting, Anne usually leads.)
Wherein we eat delicious vegetarian soup, bread, etc., and examine Patanjali's Yoga Sutra in organized topical segments.  Each immersion will cover a different group of sutras, anyone is invited to attend and you don’t have to read up ahead of time to prepare.  There will be no quiz.  It is a lecture/presentation/discussion over soup.  Social and fun, educational and nutritious.
Saturday  9:30-12:00pm Asana All Levels ($40; Devon teaches)

Once again, bringing the philosophical notions into our practice.  This class is for all levels of student but will challenge all in some way.  The class can be taken singly (separate from the rest of the weekend’s sessions), or as part of the whole Immersion.

Sources for our readings:  Of the Yoga Sutra translations, we work with both BKS Iyengar’s Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and Edwin Bryant’s The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali.  From time to time, we also work with BKS Iyengar's The Tree of Yoga and Light on Life.  We will provide these and other translations and copies of the Sutra at Devon’s house on the evenings of the Soup Kitchen.  We also make copies of stuff for you to take home.
